What did iOS 26 actually add to CarPlay?
Widgets, mostly. Weather, calendar, Home controls and third-party widgets now sit beside your apps, organised into stacks of up to five. Live Activities — delivery ETAs, sports scores — update on the screen without a tap. The Liquid Glass redesign came too. If you last checked CarPlay a year ago, the home screen looks genuinely different.
So the old complaint — “CarPlay won’t show me a widget” — is mostly solved. Credit where it’s due.
So what still isn’t built in?
Two gaps I keep running into:
- A custom startup sound. There’s no toggle in Settings for a chime when your car connects. You either use a Shortcuts automation (which adds a 1–2 second delay when the phone is locked) or an app that plays it instantly.
- Persistent synced lyrics. Apple Music does show lyrics on CarPlay in iOS 26, but as a separate tab you have to tap into — not a live, scrolling view that stays up while you drive. Spotify users get less.
Neither is a dealbreaker. Both are the kind of small friction that adds up every single commute.

How do you close the gaps?
For the startup sound, the Shortcuts route works — “When CarPlay connects, play sound” — as long as you can live with the unlock delay. For lyrics, you need a widget that streams the lines.
That’s the gap Car Play Connect sets out to close. It’s an iPhone app that adds up to five widget slots — photos, weather, music, reminders, compass — plus built-in audio packs for a startup sound and synced Apple Music or Spotify lyrics on the CarPlay screen. If your car has no CarPlay at all, its Mount Mode runs the full dashboard on the iPhone itself. It’s free, needs iOS 16.3 or later, and holds a 4.6 rating from about 2,640 App Store ratings.
One honest limitation: the full widget stack needs iOS 26.0 or newer. On older iOS it does less.
