Human Computer Interaction Design for Institute Event Website

Abstract Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the study of how people design, implement, and use interactive computer systems and how computers affect individuals, organizations, and society. This encompasses not only ease of use but also new interaction techniques for supporting user tasks, providing better access to information, and creating more powerful forms of communication. It involves input and output devices and the interaction techniques that use them; how information is presented and requested; how the computers actions are controlled and monitored; all forms of help, documentation, and training; the tools used to design, build, test, and evaluate user interfaces; and the processes that developers follow when creating Interfaces.

This paper encompasses introduction and implementation of HCI principles for web designing. Paper is summarized from following three aspects: manners of interaction, principles of interaction design, and process of interaction design. The final aim of this paper is to achieve a more harmonious relationship between human, computer and environment by means of our research.

  1. Introduction

    The most famous definition of Human Computer Interaction is as follows:

    Human-computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them.

    Event is the use of unconventional media involving people witnessing a happening within a capsule of time, for the purpose of communication of a message.

    This is an informative website that will be used to display the details about the cultural festival of VESIT college.

    The website briefly describes the various events that will be conducted during the festival.

    The various events will be categorized under different headings which are called portfolios.

    It is an Event Management system, to manage dynamic content which is changing at regular and fast intervals. Then the web interface allows users to manage it from anywhere using just a web browser and predefined authentication. The servers can be used to create content, manage content and post or deploy content on the website.

  2. Design considerations

    What is a website?

    A website is a collection of files hosted on a server that is open for internet access. The format of these files is internet browser

    These files come in an internet browsers readable format. The files should be hosted on a server (web host), this server is connected to internet. The most common extension of internet browser files is .html or .htm.

    In order to access the files they should have a unique internet identifier Domain.

    The domain should point to the hosting server in order for the files to be available for internet access by the web browser. The domain and the hosting server should be linked.

  3. The concept of human computer interaction

    Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the technological science that researches the communication between human and computer through mutual understanding and exchange, achieve to management, service and process

    information functions for people at the maximum probability. It makes the computer truly become a harmonious assistant in peoples life. Nowadays HCI has developed into fourth generation; multi-modes interaction is the main feature and development direction of fourth generation HCI. The process of HCI is actually a process of inputting and outputting information

    1. Cognitive Psychology

      Cognitive psychology researches peoples senior process of psychological activities, mainly include cognitive process, such as attention, perception, representation, memory, thinking and language, etc. Cognitive subject can simultaneously process multi-information

  4. Investigation and research on the user

    Before getting start to design the form and function of a distance education website, we should have a clear awareness of who are the users and what are their core demands Therefore, the method of user investigation & research is utilized in order to get the features for what they need

    1. Image Interaction

      Image interaction means human and computer communicates with each other by sends and receives images, then processes the images to understand information and make response. The image is the carrier of information, can divide into static image and dynamic image. The 70 percents of information human perceived from environment are received from visual system [12]. So image interaction is a very important manner in HCI field. Nowadays, the truth that image designs of web pages become more and more elegant also proves the importance of image interaction.

    2. Area match

      When people face the screen, the attention allocated on different area of the screen is different. When eyes deviate from the center of vision and on the premise of equal deviation distance, people eye more on the upper-left area, then is upper-right, low-left, and people allocate the lest attention on the low-right area generally. (see fig.3 vision allocation). So we need to allocate important content on the best area.

    3. The logic among the contents on the Webpage

      Designers should let the user learn the relationship among the contents by designing color, font and layout etc.. These are also the basic guideline of Webpage design. For an example: Within a website, compared with the second or lower level content, the first level content should be displayed with bigger size font. More important content should have more striking methods to display. Animation, bigger size font or striking-contrast color etc. could be used, which can provide visual cues, show the relationships among the contents

    4. Consistence of Webpage design

      Within a website, home page and other pages should have consistent design style to guarantee they are felt as a whole. Such as within a website, the logo should has the size and is located at same position on different pages; the style of the font, layout and color should be consonant; more important, the navigation system should be clear and consistent on different level pagesThe principle of consistence can help the user to understand the structure of the website easily. He can expand his knowledge on the home page to other pages, which could reduce his burden

      on study and memory. The font, color and pictures on Webpage should be consistent with the website target. Such as if a website target on the children, it could select carton style font for childrens vivacious character. But for news portals, since its target users need magnanimity information, font selection should emphasis more on readability.

  5. Conclusion

    Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) examines how computer interfaces can best support human abilities, using controlled experiments to reach definitive conclusions. HCI concepts, principles and research conclusions help us develop usable, useful, and univeral interfaces and can be applied to specific design problems when developing a web site or web based application. However, the goals presented in this paper were meant to be broadly applicable so that they would encompass most interfaces in existence today. Also, HCI is definitely a changing field and it will continue to change as computers and their uses change. It is an ever evolving field but it is always true to its one underlying aim – to make the computer more friendly and easy to use for the user.
