1s. K. M. Basha Department of Botany,

Vikrama Simhapuri University P.G. Centre, Kavali

Abstract -The Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Rajiv Gandhi .) occurs on the Nallamala Ranges (78°30' 79°28'E; 15°53'16°43'N) in Andhra

Pradesh at elevations varying from 100 to 917 m. The area consists mostly (80%) of the area is gently rolling to steeply hilly (incl. a ref. in support).. These ranges include many plateaus of which Amrabad, Srisailam, Peddacheruvu, Sivapuram, Nekkanti are noteworthy.

The present paper refers to 214 species belonging to

175 genera, 91 families. Out of 91 families, 85 are of angiosperms, five are of Pteridophytes and one is a gymnosperm. The medicinal ferns of Pteridophytes are Adiantum caudatum, Actinopteris radiate, Christella dentate, Hemionitis arifolia, and Lygodium flexosum. Cycas beddomei is the only one gymnosperm. There are 60 (27.02%) herbs, 41 shrubs (18.46%) 77 trees(34.68%), and 33(14.86%) climbers. 34.68% of medicinal plants constitute trees.

Key Words: Eastern Ghats, Deities Tribes.

  1. INTRODUCTION:

The Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Rajiv Gandhi .) occurs on the Nallamala Ranges (78°30' 79°28'E; 15°53'16°43'N) in Andhra

Pradesh at elevations varying from 100 to 917 m. The Elevation varies from 100 m (330 ft) to 917 m (3,009 ft) above mean sea level.

Nargarjunasagar Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a sanctuary in 1978 and made a part of Protect Tigerin 1983. In 1992, the reserve was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. Apart from tigers, the reserve is home for Over 150 bird species also occur here. Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar dams serve as water sources.

The perennial water sources are generally located in the valleys and the plateaus suffer from acute scarcity of water during summers. The Krishna River cuts its basin almost 200 m deep over a distance of 130 km through the reserve. The mean temperatures are 16°C in June (name the months) winter (December) and 43°C in summer (May) (name the months).

  2. STUDY AREA

Nargarjunasagar Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a sanctuary in 1978 and made a part of Protect Tigerin 1983. In 1992, the reserve was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary.

The main types of forest biomes in the reserve are : southern tropical dry deciduos forest Hardwickia forest and Deccan thorn scrub forests with much Euphorbia scrub. Important plant species here are : Anogeissuslatifolia ( axlewood ) , Cleisthanthus collinus (odcha)

, Terminalia spp., Pterocarpus marsupium , Hardwickia binata (anjan tree), Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense or Salai ) , Tectona grandis ( teak ), Mundulea sericea and Albizia spp. (silk plants). (Champion H.G., Seth.S.K.1968).

  3. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Field trips were undertaken during the four seasons- viz,Summer,Monsoon,Autumn and Winter in20142016. Details such as vegetative, flowering and fruiting stages of the plant species were observed.. The plant specimens were collected and determined using Gamble (1967) and Hooker (1897). During the field work, the specimens collected for the preparation of herbarium were processed following Jain and Rao (1977).

  1. DISCUSSION

Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary in the Eastern Ghats is a rich biodiversity landscape of Deccan. The total number of medicinal plant species collected in this study from Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary is 214 species of 175 genera belonging to 91 families. Among these 18 Critically Endangered Plants (CE); 23 Endangered Plants (EN); 19 Near Threatened Plants (NT) ; 2 rare Plants are recorded.

  2. CONCLUSION

This report will be useful for researchers in the field of Ethanobotany, Ethanomedicine, Taxonomy, and Pharmacology for further studies. The tribals and local people who reside near and around the Sanctuary still depend on the plants to cure various ailments .This study also aims to create awareness among the non-tribal main stream society so as to realise the value of the sustainable biodiversity of wild life sanctuary. Numerous anthropogenic

activities like developmental projects, eco-tourism, modernization, urbanization, overexploitation, over grazing are the major threats for the wild life sanctuary. This recognizes the need to conserve its biological resources. Wild life sanctuaries depict cultural, traditional, sociological, biological, economical values and are the chief method of in-situ conservation of biodiversity. Conservation of biological resources and of the indigenous traditional knowledge is essential for sustainable development and managing natural resources the world over. The history of indigenous knowledge as an old as the human race. This knowledge has always been very important for the people who generate it.It is a matter of survival for them. Two Rare medicinal plants Andrographis nallmalayana, and Gyrocarpus americanus Jacq.were found in the study area

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

The authors are thankful to all the local people who shared their knowledge on medicinally useful plants throughout. In and around the villages of the wild life sanctuary. .
