  1. INTRODUCTION

Electronic commerce (e-commerce) has transformed the way businesses conduct transactions by enabling digital platforms that provide faster, more efficient, and more accessible services. One of the most significant applications of e-commerce is the online bidding system, which allows buyers to compete for products or services through electronic auctions. Compared with traditional auction methods, online bidding systems improve accessibility, reduce administrative effort, and provide a transparent environment for managing auctions.

Traditional auction processes rely on manual bid registration, participant management, and winner selection. These methods are often time-consuming, susceptible to human error, and difficult to manage when handling multiple auction items or a large number of participants. In addition, maintaining accurate bidding records and preparing auction summaries require considerable effort, reducing the overall efficiency of the auction process.

Advancements in software engineering have enabled the development of automated auction platforms that overcome these limitations. By integrating features such as bid validation, automatic winner determination, bidding history management, and auction reporting, online bidding systems simplify auction operations while improving accuracy and transparency. Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) plays an important role in developing such systems because it promotes modularity, code reusability, and easier maintenance through concepts such as encapsulation and abstraction.

This research presents the design and implementation of a modular Online Bidding System developed using the C++ programming language and Object-Oriented Programming principles. The proposed system automates the complete auction process, including auction item management, bid validation, bidding history maintenance, winner determination, and auction summary generation. The objective is to provide an efficient and reliable software solution that demonstrates the practical application of software engineering and Engineering Design Thinking principles in solving real-world auction management problems.

The remainder of this paper is organized as follows. Section II reviews related studies on online auction systems and software engineering approaches. Section III identifies the research gap addressed by this work. Section IV presents the problem statement, followed by the research objectives in Section V. Section VI describes the research methodology, while Section VII discusses the system design and implementation. Section VIII presents the results and discussion, and the paper concludes with future work, acknowledgments, and references.

  2. LITERATURE REVIEW

The rapid growth of electronic commerce has increased the demand for efficient online auction platforms that provide transparency, accessibility, and secure transaction management. Over the years, researchers have proposed various online bidding systems to replace traditional auction methods and improve the efficiency of auction operations.

Early online auction systems primarily focused on basic functionalities such as item listing, bid registration, and winner selection. Although these systems reduced manual effort, they often lacked advanced features including bid validation, comprehensive bidding history, automated report generation, and modular software architecture. As a result, maintaining fairness and managing auction records efficiently remained challenging.

Recent studies emphasize the importance of applying software engineering principles in the development of auction management systems. Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) has become one of the most widely adopted programming paradigms because it enables developers to model real-world entities through reusable classes and objects. Concepts such as encapsulation, abstraction, and modularity contribute to software

maintainability, scalability, and ease of future enhancement.

Several researchers have also explored intelligent auction systems by incorporating cloud computing, database management systems, and web technologies. These systems provide real-time bidding, secure user authentication, and centralized data management. However, many of these implementations require sophisticated infrastructure and are designed primarily for commercial applications rather than educational purposes.

The proposed Online Bidding System differs from many existing educational implementations by integrating essential auction functionalities including bid validation, auction management, bidding history maintenance, automatic winner selection, and auction summary generationwithin a modular C++ application. This approach demonstrates the practical application of software engineering concepts while maintaining simplicity, making the system suitable for academic projects and future extensions.

  3. RESEARCH GAP

Although numerous online auction platforms have been developed, several limitations remain in existing educational and small-scale implementations. Many systems focus only on demonstrating basic auction operations without emphasizing software architecture, modular programming, or maintainability. Some implementations also lack proper bid validation, detailed bidding records, and automated report generation.

Furthermore, commercially available auction platforms often rely on complex technologies, cloud infrastructure, and database integration that may not be suitable for unergraduate software development projects. These systems can be difficult to understand, modify, or extend for educational purposes.

This research addresses these limitations by developing a modular Online Bidding System using Object-Oriented Programming principles in C++. The proposed system combines essential auction functionalities within a simple yet structured software architecture that demonstrates software engineering practices while remaining easy to maintain and expand.

  4. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Traditional auction systems depend heavily on manual procedures for recording bids, identifying

winning bidders, and maintaining auction records. These manual operations increase the possibility of human error, require significant administrative effort, and reduce the overall efficiency of auction management.

In addition, conventional auctions often restrict participation to specific locations and scheduled time periods, limiting accessibility for potential bidders. As the number of participants and auction items increases, managing the auction process becomes increasingly difficult.

Therefore, there is a need for an automated Online Bidding System capable of validating bids, maintaining accurate auction records, determining winners automatically, and generating comprehensive auction summaries while improving transparency and reducing manual intervention.

  5. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The primary objective of this research is to design and implement an efficient Online Bidding System using the C++ programming language and Object- Oriented Programming principles.

The specific objectives of this research are:

    1. To develop a modular software application for managing online auctions.

    2. To automate bid validation and winner selection.

    3. To maintain accurate bidding history for every auction item.

    4. To generate comprehensive auction summaries after the completion of each auction.

    5. To improve transparency and reduce manual errors in auction management.

    6. To demonstrate the application of software engineering and Engineering Design Thinking principles in solving a real-world electronic commerce problem.

  6. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The development of the proposed Online Bidding System followed a structured software engineering methodology combined with the principles of Engineering Design Thinking. The methodology was designed to ensure that the developed application effectively addresses the limitations of conventional auction systems while maintaining simplicity, modularity, and reliability.

    1. Problem Identification

The first stage involved identifying the challenges associated with traditional auction methods. Manual bid recording, delayed winner selection, limited accessibility, and inefficient record management were recognized as the primary issues affecting the transparency and efficiency of auction operations.

    2. Requirement Analysis

Functional and non-functional requirements were identified before the implementation phase. Functional requirements included auction item management, bid validation, bidding history maintenance, winner determination, and auction summary generation. Non-functional requirements focused on software reliability, modularity, maintainability, and ease of use.

    3. System Design

The software architecture was designed using Object-Oriented Programming principles. Independent classes and modules were created to represent auction items, bidders, bids, and system management components. This modular structure improves code organization and simplifies future enhancements.

    4. System Implementation

The proposed system was implemented using the C++ programming language. Object-oriented concepts such as encapsulation, abstraction, and modular programming were applied throughout the development process to improve software maintainability and reduce code redundancy.

    5. Testing and Evaluation

The completed application was tested using multiple auction scenarios involving different products and bidders. System performance was evaluated by verifying bid validation, winner selection, bidding history maintenance, and auction summary generation. The testing confirmed that all major functionalities operated correctly and produced accurate auction results.

  7. SYSTEM DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION

The proposed Online Bidding System was designed as a modular desktop application that automates the complete auction process while maintaining transparency and accuracy. The software architecture consists of several interconnected modules that work together to manage auction activities efficiently.

The Auction Management Module serves as the central controller of the application. It is responsible for displaying the user interface, managing auction operations, and coordinating communication between different software modules. Users interact with the system through a menu-driven interface that allows them to perform auction-related operations in a structured manner.

The Auction Item Module stores essential information about each auction item, including the item name, category, starting price, current highest bid, and winning bidder. This module continuously updates auction information whenever a new valid bid is accepted.

The Bid Management Module processes every bid submitted by participants. Before accepting a bid, the system verifies that the entered amount exceeds the current highest bid. Invalid or lower bids are rejected automatically, ensuring fairness throughout the auction process.

The Auction Summary Module generates a detailed report after the completion of the auction. The summary includes sold and unsold items, winning bidders, highest bid amounts, and overall auction results. This feature improves transparency by providing users with a complete overview of the auction outcome.

The implementation utilizes Object-Oriented Programming concepts to improve software quality. Each module performs a specific responsibility, reducing dependency between components and making the application easier to maintain, modify, and extend. This modular architecture also provides flexibility for integrating additional features such as database connectivity, user authentication, and online deployment in future versions of the system.

The developed application successfully demonstrates how software engineering principles can be applied to create an efficient and organized electronic auction platform while maintaining simplicity suitable for educational purposes.

  8. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The developed Online Bidding System was evaluated through multiple simulated auction scenarios involving different auction items and bidders. The primary objective of the evaluation was to verify the accuracy, reliability, and functionality of the proposed system under normal operating conditions.

The testing results demonstrated that the application successfully performed all essential auction

operations. The system accurately validated user bids by accepting only bids that exceeded the current highest bid while automatically rejecting invalid or lower bids. This mechanism ensured fairness throughout the auction process and eliminated common errors associated with manual auction management.

The software also maintained a complete bidding history for each auction item, allowing users to track bidding activities and verify auction outcomes. Automatic winner determination significantly reduced administrative effort by eliminating manual calculations and minimizing the possibility of human error. Furthermore, the generated auction summary provided a clear overview of sold items, unsold items, winning bidders, and final bid prices, improving transparency and simplifying post- auction analysis.

From a software engineering perspective, the modular architecture contributed to better code organization and maintainability. The separation of auction management, bid processing, and reporting into independent modules reduced coupling between system components, making the application easier to modify and extend. The implementation also demonstrated the practical benefits of Object- Oriented Programming by improving code reusability and simplifying future software maintenance.

Overall, the experimental evaluation confirmed that the proposed Online Bidding System effectively achieves its intended objectives. The application provides a reliable and efficient solution for managing electronic auctions while demonstrating the successful application of software engineering principles and Engineering Design Thinking in solving a practical e-commerce problem.

  9. LIMITATIONS

Although the proposed system successfully meets its objectives, several limitations remain. The application is currently implemented as a standalone desktop program and does not support multi-user networking or real-time online bidding. In addition, auction data is maintained only during program execution and is not stored permanently in a database. The current implementation also lacks user authentication, secure payment processing, and encryption mechanisms required for commercial deployment. These limitations make the system more suitable as an educational prototype than a production-level online auction platform.
