Oil pipeline vandalism is on the increase in the oil rich Nigeria Niger Delta region with over 400,000 barrels of crude oil lost to crude oil bunkerers as a result of rampant rupturing and vandalisation of pipelines transporting crude oil and refined products from one point to another in the region. In this paper automated electronic pipeline vandalism detection and surveillance system with the capacity to detect intrusion into pipeline system before vandalisation takes place and send SMS and email alerts to plant operators. The system is also integrated with a surveillance camera so as to capture the video footage needed in tracking and prosecuting the criminals in court of law.
